Abstract
Purpose This study was done to identify effective non-pharmacological intervention programs for the aged with hypertension by reviewing related research studies in Korea and other countries. Method: Analysis was done of 29 related articles, 12 domestic studies and 17 studies from other countries, published between 1980 and 2007. Results 1) All domestic
studies were quasi-experimental designs, whereas 16 foreign studies were RCTs. Ten foreign studies and 2 domestic studies used multidisciplinary
approaches. Average number of participants was 26.9 in Korea and 181.5 in
other countries. Duration of intervention in other countries was longer than Korea. 2) In other countries. the most popular intervention
methods were education and counselling focused on lifestyle modification and exercise, whereas relaxation and complimentary methods were most common in Korea. 3) The interventions that showed significant positive effects on blood pressure were education and counselling focused on lifestyle modification (7 studies), exercise (7 studies) and relaxation methods (1 studies).
Conclusion When developing intervention programs for the aged with hypertension, it is essential to use multidisciplinary approaches focused on changes in health behavior to improve lifestyle. As for the research design, larger RCT research studies with longer intervention periods are necessary to identify causal relationship.
