Effects of Hand Acupressure on Blood Pressure of Older Adults

Abstract
Purpose The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of hand acupressure for elders as a nursing intervention
to decrease blood pressure. Methods This research was a quasi-experimental study with 52 patients
(experimental group: 25, control group: 27). For the experimental group, hand acupressure was given by trained
research aids whom specialist recognized for their acupressure skill. The collected data were analyzed using
x2-test, Fisher's exact test, t-test and repeated measures ANOVA with the SPSS/WIN 20.0 program. Results
There were significant decreases in systolic and diastolic blood pressure according to time. But there was no significant
difference between experimental and control group. Conclusion Although the results of the study indicate
that hand acupressure is effective in lowering blood pressure, there is a need for further study before the results
can be generalized.
