Abstract
Purpose This study was done to examine
the reality of sexual life and ego-integrity
among elderly people. Method: The participants
in this study were 206 adults aged 65 years or
over, attending senior centers or senior schools
located in C area. Data were collected during
November and December 2007. All participants
were surveyed about their sexual life and
ego-integrity. Frequencies, means, chi-square
test, t-test and one-way ANOVA with SPSS
Win were used for data analysis. Results
There were significant differences in ego-integrity
scores based on whether a sexually active life
was maintained or not. Of the 206 elders,
68.9% reported maintenance of their sexual
life. Spouses were sex partners for 85.2% of
them. The mean ego-integrity score was 105.87
(range: 67-142). Ego-integrity showed significant
differences based on satisfaction with past
sexual life experience (F=4.995, p=.002),
present sexual activity (t=3.298, p<.000),
types of sexual partners (F=3.559, p=.031),
and satisfaction with present sexual life
(F=3.643, p=.007). Conclusion The significant
correlation found between sexual life and
ego-integrity suggests the need to develop and
apply programs that will encourage healthier
sexual lives for elderly people.
