Elder Care related Knowledge, Attitudes, Nursing Practice and Awareness of Elder Abuse in Geriatric Hospital Health Personnels

Abstract
Purpose The purpose of this study was to examine elder care related knowledge, attitudes, nursing practice and
awareness of elder abuse in geriatric hospital health personnel. Methods The participants were 382 health personnel
from 7 geriatric hospitals in 3 cities. Questionnaires contained structured questions on geriatric hospital
health personnel's knowledge, attitudes, nursing practice and elder abuse awareness. Descriptive analysis, t-test,
one-way ANOVA, Scheffe? test and Pearson correlation coefficients were used with SPSS/WIN 12.0 program for
data analysis. Results Knowledge level of nurses was significantly higher than that of nurse assistants or caregivers
(p=.002). Nursing care performed by caregivers was significantly higher than that of nurse assistants or
nurses (p<.001). Attitude and elder abuse awareness did not make a significant difference according to
occupation. Attitudes, knowledge and nursing practice were partially correlated. The level of nursing practice performed
by nurses, nurse assistants or caregivers correlated with elder abuse awareness. Conclusion The results
of the study indicate a need for appropriate education and clinical guidelines on elder abuse for geriatric hospital
personnel. More studies are needed to identify factors influencing elder abuse in geriatric hospitals.
