Abstract
Many elderly patients with a hip fracture can not fully recover their previous level activities of daily living (ADD. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the functional recovery of daily living activities and to investigate the influencing factors on it in the hip-fractured elderly patients. The subjects consisted of 77 patients over 60 years of age who received surgery for femoral neck and intertrochanteric fractures from June 1998 to May 2000 at Chonnam National University Hospital. Data were collected through individual interviews over the phone by using a questionnaire and reviewing patients' charts. The level of ADL recovery was -13.35 points after surgery. Function of personal hygiene control, housekeeping, mobility, absence of pain and memory function were all significantly reduced compared to those of their pre-fractured state (p<0.05). The level of recovery 3-6 months after surgery was -16.17 point and that of 6-9 months after surgery was -16.31, which does not show great improvement, between those periods of time. However, the recovery levels of 9-12 months, 12-18 months, and 18-24 months after surgery were -6.71, -5.64, and -4.59, respectively. The influencing factors on recovery of ADLs were the length of time after surgery (p=.001), social activity (p=0.003), the number of associated fractures (p=.001), and the presence of osteoporosis (p=0.01).
